Tannins in Water — Yellow & Tea-Colored Water Treatment

Yellow, brown, or tea-colored water from organic tannins is a common well water issue in Southeast Texas. We remove it permanently.

What Are Tannins in Well Water?

Tannins are naturally occurring organic compounds that leach into groundwater from decaying vegetation, leaves, bark, and peat. They are especially common in shallow wells, wells near wooded areas, and regions with high organic soil content — conditions found throughout Southeast Texas and the Piney Woods region.

While tannins are not a health hazard, they cause yellow, brown, or tea-colored water that stains laundry, fixtures, and dishes. Tannins also create a musty or earthy taste and can interfere with other water treatment processes like iron removal and water softening.

Signs of Tannins in Your Water

  • Yellow, brown, or tea-colored water from the tap
  • Musty, earthy, or swampy taste and odor
  • Water looks clear but leaves yellow stains on white fabrics
  • Discoloration most noticeable in toilet bowls and tubs
  • Yellow tinge in ice cubes or when water sits in a glass
  • Water softener or iron filter not removing the color

How We Test for Tannins

Tannins are often confused with iron staining because both can cause discoloration. A proper water test distinguishes between the two: iron produces orange/rust stains while tannins produce yellow/brown stains. We also test tannin concentration levels to properly size the treatment system for your water.

Tannin Removal Solutions

Tannin-Selective Anion Resin Filter

Specialized ion exchange resin designed specifically for tannin removal. Regenerates with salt brine similar to a water softener. Most effective for moderate tannin levels.

Organic Scavenging Resin System

Advanced resin formulation that targets dissolved organic compounds including tannins, humic acid, and fulvic acid. Ideal for heavily-organic well water.

Reverse Osmosis (Drinking Water)

For tannin-free drinking and cooking water, an under-sink RO system removes tannins along with other dissolved contaminants at the point of use.

Combination Treatment System

For wells with tannins plus iron or hardness, we design multi-stage systems that address all issues in the correct treatment order.

Why Standard Filters Don't Work

Tannins are dissolved organic molecules — they pass right through sediment filters and carbon filters designed for particulates and chlorine. Standard water softeners will not remove tannins either. In fact, tannins can foul softener resin over time, reducing its effectiveness. Proper tannin removal requires specialized anion exchange resin formulated for organic compounds.
