What Is Hard Water?

Hard water is water that contains elevated concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium. These minerals enter groundwater as it percolates through limestone and dolomite formations — which are widespread throughout Southeast Texas. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). Montgomery, Walker, Grimes and Houston Counties area water typically ranges from 10–25 GPG, which is classified as very hard.

When hard water is heated or evaporates, calcium carbonate precipitates out of solution and deposits as white scale. Over time this scale coats the inside of pipes, water heaters, and appliances — reducing efficiency and causing premature failure.
