Acidic Water & Low pH Treatment in Southeast Texas

Water with pH below 7.0 is corrosive — it eats copper pipes, fixtures, and water heaters. A calcite pH neutralizer raises pH naturally and permanently.

What Is Acidic Water?

Water pH is measured on a scale of 0–14, with 7.0 being neutral. Water below 7.0 is acidic. Rainwater naturally picks up carbon dioxide and forms carbonic acid, producing soft water with low pH. Well water drawn from shallow aquifers or areas with peat soils can also be naturally acidic.

The EPA secondary standard for pH in drinking water is 6.5–8.5. Water below 6.5 is considered corrosive and will leach copper, lead, and zinc from plumbing materials — potentially causing health concerns and expensive plumbing repairs.

Signs of Acidic Water

  • Blue-green stains on copper sinks, tubs, and shower floors
  • Green or teal corrosion on copper pipe joints and fittings
  • Pinhole leaks in copper plumbing
  • Metallic or slightly sour taste in water
  • Pitting and corrosion on water heater tank
  • pH test result below 7.0

pH Correction Solutions

Calcite pH Neutralizer (Preferred)

A tank of crushed calcium carbonate (calcite) slowly dissolves into the water, raising pH naturally. Low maintenance, no chemicals, and media is replaced annually. Best for mildly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.9).

Calcite / Corosex Blend

For more acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5), a blend of calcite and magnesium oxide (Corosex) provides faster and more aggressive pH correction without excessive hardness addition.

Chemical Feed (Soda Ash / Sodium Bicarbonate)

A chemical metering pump injects a sodium carbonate solution. Provides precise pH control and is preferred for very low pH (below 5.5) or high flow rate applications.
